CROPS DAMAGED BY SPARROWS

Problem In North

Otago

Sparrows are heavily damaging crops in parts of North Otago. At one time the birds attacked only small areas, but persistent, larger raids are now being made. Poisoned grain and a bounty of 4s for 100 sparrow eggs offered by the Maheno County Council are reducing the menace but little. One of the harde«t-hrt districts is Maheno. Many belts of trees provide shelter, and the poultry industry keeps many sparrows alive until harvest time.

The Department of Scientific and industrial Research, the Department of Agriculture, and Federated Farmers are considering preventive measures.
