Sunny, Dry December

December in Christchurch was the sunniest since 1955. It wag hotter and drier than usual. There was bright sunshine tor 230 hours, which is 30 hours more than the month’s average. The meteorological office at Christchurch Airport reports that only ,45in of rain fell in December, 15 per cent of the normal rainfall for the month, and this fell on five days. December 12 was the wettest of these with a quarter inch. Twice as many rainy days can usually -be expected in December.

On six days the temperature went above 80 deg. and on Christmas Eve it reached 87.3 deg. The mean temperature tor the month was 62.7 deg (three degrees higher than average) and the daily minimum did not fall below 38.4 deg. That was on December 17. Grass and earth temperatures also remained high above average.
