NEW YEAR AT SCOTT BASE

Virtual Holiday For Staff

Work never really stops at Scott Base, Antarctica, because of the regular scientific observations and necessary chores done to keep the base going. But New Year’s Day was virtually a holiday, according to the deputy leader and post master there, Mr R. Jefiferys, who spoke to “The Press” by radio telephone.

"We spent the day very quietly,” he said, “and we had a very pleasant New Year’s Eve. with some of our American friends over to visit.

“It was a very good party to see the New Year in, and our visitors arrived just before midnight. We had Squadron Leader P, Patrick of the R.A.F. and Flying Officer P. Tremayne of the R.N.Z.A.F., both of whom are attached to VX-6 Squadron here.

"We aad ample beer, which we obtained by undisclosed means.”

Mr Jeffreys said he had been a little concerned last week that the Christmas mail for Scott Base would not arrive in time, but it had turned up late on Christmas night. The mail had been delayed tor a fortnight because of the Christmas rush and the uncertainty of flights to the Antarctic.
