BIG LEAD BY INDIA

England’s Failure

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) CALCUTTA, Jan. 2.

England has a great deal to do to save the fourth test against India after another batting failure yesterday. At the end of the third day, India was 274 runs ahead with seven second innings wickets standing. It scored 380 in its first innings and then dismissed England for 212. If India wins it will have a great chance of taking the series for the first time in history since most people expect the Madras pitch to produce a draw in the final test.

England’s miserable total of 212 left it 168 behind on the first innings. India did not press home the advantage but still finished in a powerful position. Tomorrow is a rest day and play resumes on Wednesday with two full days to go. England’s remaining seven wickets fell for 105 runs, E. R. Dexter alone showing any ability to play the spinners, C. J. Borde and the lefthander, S. Durani. Borde did the main damage in the innings with wickets of the left-handers P. E. Richardson, P. H. Parfitt and R. W. Barber, and also Dexter. Durani dismissed the dangerous K. F. Barrington and the tail-enders to finish with the better figures of five for 47.

After its big first innings lead India was expected to push the scoring rate and the openers, N. J. Contractor and M. L. Jaisimha, did that with 37 in the first half-hour. But the situation changed when the spinners, G. A. R. Lock and D. A. Allen, took over. They bowled for 145 minutes and only 74 runs were added. Scores:

India.—First innings, 380; second innings, 106 for three (Jaisimha 36, V. Manjrekar 27, Nawab of Pataudi 24 not out; Lock two for 40).

England.—First innings, 212 (Richardson 62, Dexter 57, Parfitt 21; Durani five for 47, Borde four for 65).
