At least 331 Americans died on roads acroes the nation during the New Year holiday week-end. while a record 83 died in fires. In Canada, at least 26 people died in traffic smashes

The American tolL from 6 p.m. on Friday to midnight last night, was higher than the estimate issued before the week-end by the National Safety Council. Belated reports of other fatal smashes were expected to send the number higher.
