BOOST FOR SQUASH
QQUASH rackets in Canter- ° bury in the coming season will be considerably strengthened by the recent transfer to Christchurch from Dunedin of the former New Zealand representative, G. A. Davidson. A university student, Davidson is already practising regularly tor the winter's competitions. Also well-known as a tennis player, Davidson came Into prominence at squash rackets while still a junior in 1958. He won the national boys’ title for the second time, beating G. L. Bird tn the final. In the men's championship in the same year, Davidson eliminated D. G Green, 9-5. 9-7, 8-2, and won a place in the New Zealand team to play the touring Australians. In the international match. Davidson made a good showing against the Australian B Boys, winning one game, 9-1, out losing in four. This game was one of only two won by the New Zealanders, who were outclassed by the visitors. The other New Zealand representatives were F. N. Coe. A M. Johns, and D. D. Mochen.
Davidson was forced by illness to give up squash racket* in the following season, and he has not played seriously since then. This season, however, he hopo* to play regularly in club matches and tournament*. His presence in locsl competition* should give Christchurch's better young player* more opportunities to improv* their game.
