Softball BEATTY CUP TO HUTT
Final Day At Wanganui (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI. Dec. 2. Defeating both its strongest rivals, Wellington and Auckland, by the similar score of 1-0 on the final day of the Beatty Cup tournament toda.v, Hutt Valley emerged as the premier interprovincial team ox New Zealand softball. Hutt Valley’s unbeaten record at the tournament stemmed from the magnificent pitching of W. Massey and the ability of the rest of the team to rise to the occasion. In the crucial games against Wellington and Auckland, the Hutt Valley fielding probably reached its highest efficiency of the week, while the batting showed a marked improvement. Even if Hutt Valley scored only one run In each of the last two games, the batting was full of purpose and worth,* support for the great control of Massey. Once Hutt Valley gained the run, Massey and the fielders were fully equal to holding the lead. The final standings were Hutt Valley, 10 wins; Wellington. 9 wins. 1 loss; Auckland, 3. 2; Canterbury and Wanganui. 6,4; Waikato. 5. 5; Manawatu and Rotorua. 4. 6; Southland, 2. 8; West Coast, 1. 9; Otago, 10 losses.
