23-STONE CANOEIST
Mishaps On Wanganui (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 26. A 17-year-old. 23-stone member of a canoe party which left Taumarunui today on the 144-mile trip down the Wanganui river to Wanganui expected to be demoted to a rubber dinghy after he tipped out of his canoe three times in the first quarter-mile of the journey. He was one of the 14strong group made up of members of the Otahuhu Methodist Boys’ Brigade company and Otahuhu Methodist Bible Class. The party took off in nine canoes and a rubber dinghy on the first stage of the proposed six-day trip. The boys, two of whom have made the trip before, made their own canoes. The 23-stone boy, probably the heaviest to attempt the journey, had a speciallyreinforced canoe, and because of his weight he was exempted from carrying any provisions. The top part of his jacket had to be enlarged to accommodate him. Soon after starting he tipped out and repeated the performance twice more before meeting up with Taumarunui friends a quarter of a mile downstream. As he had, at this stage, swum further than he had canoed, there were threats to transfer him to a dinghy. More than 50 canoeists are now on the river and another large party from Auckland is due to leave tomorrow.
