TWO GIRLS RESCUED

Dangerous Hole At Waimairi Two girls in their teens spent an anxious 15 minutes in the sea off Waimairi beach yesterday. Trapped by rising water, they were unable to return to the beach because of a deep hole. The girls made no signal. But their plight was noticed by two members of the Waimairi Surf Life-saving Club, who rescued them. A club spokesman said yesterday that the hole was dangerous. It appeared south of the surf club building a month ago and had since become bigger. The hole was now marked out of the swimming area and watched by patrols, he said. Yesterday’s incident showed what could easily happen, he said. The girls moved along in line with the beach in what they thought was safe, wajst-high water. But the hole, between them and the beach, was over their heads.
