Marwon Outstays Cup Horses At Ellerslie

"The Press" Special Service • AUCKLAND, December 26. Excellent staying form by several of the cup horses in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap today gave bright prospects of an excellent race in the Auckland Cup next Monday. Marwon won this time but with not much to spare from half a dozen others. In a bracket with Chatsmore and Daysun, Marwon was a warm favourite and in the T.A.B. double with Rochdale his return was only £5 16s for £l.

The honours were clearly with Marwon and his rider, K. A. Nuttall. With half a mile of the 12-furlong course to go. Marwon was running near last. Coming to the last furlong he was deep in the pack behind the first halfdozen. Nuttall then seized a chance run and he urged Marwon away for a decisive victory. A wiry five-year-old gelding by Marco Polo II from Shirwan, Marwon is being prepared at Te Aroha by D J Arnott, who won the Auckland Cup in 1960 with Marie Brizard. In Marwon. which he has brought cleverly to peak form again, he has another very formidable contender for the big race. The next best after Marwon was Ruato which won the cup last season. Then came Woodlore and the Canterbury visitor, Compensate. Ruato was one of the tailenders for the first mile so his effort was highly creditable. He promises to be right at his best for the cup. Ruato was one of the visiting horses on hand for the cup which acquitted himself well. Compensate and Embrace were others. Ruato comes from Wanganui. Embrace from Hastings. and Compensate from Orari. Marwon and his bracketed runners carried £11.745 in the win and place betting on the Queen Elizabeth Handicap out of £47,506. They were also in heavy demand from betters on the double. Second Leg A sprint gallop as good as might be seen anywhere won Rochdale the second leg. the Newmarket Handicap. After the first two furlongs, run at a very hot pace. Rochdale was so far behind that he seemed to have hardly any chance But when it came to the finish, he was the winner quite clearly. The outburst of applause which greeted Rochdale when he returned to scale was no more than adequate recognition of his brilliant performance. There were 62.476 doubles tickets (5s unit) of which 45,890 were held oft the course, on Rochdale. Rochdale went the six furlongs course of the Newmarket Handicap in Imin 10 3-ssec which is as fast a race over that distance at Ellerslie since the starting posts were resited about two years ago. His last half-mile was timed at 45sec. The weather was fine and sunny and the going very fast. The attendance was 26.193 against 25,065 oh the first day last year.

length and a quarter. Ruato finished on to nose Woodlore from second and Compensate. Climbing and Embrace were the next three close up. There was a short gap to Chatsmore, Floutulla. Senor. Sigh. Jim's Count and Clymon. Rochdale Drifts Except for Gold Raider and Rochdale the runners in the Newmarket Handicap kept in line making the rise to the five furlongs. Mali then went ahead at a solid pace from Fair Merit. Don Palatine and Windermere were the next two leading Shamrock Queen Making the turn into the straight Mali just led Fair Merit. There was a length and a half to Don Palatine and Windermere and a further two lengths to Gold Raider and D Day. Rochdale began to gather in the tail-enders fast. A furlong and a half from the finish Fair Merit challenged Mali. Windermere and Don Palatine joined in and Rochdale came into the finish down the outside in the last 100 yards. It was all Rochdale and he ran to the post three-quarters of a length ahead of Don Palatine which shaded Windermere for second. Shamrock Queen improved slightly for fourth and D Day came fifth. Woodlore, Biltong, Climbing and Chatsmore ran past the mile and a quarter closely bunched ahead of Top Liner, Uplands Lad and Compensate. Sigh dropped right to the back. With a round to go Chatsmore led by a length from Biltong, Woodlore, Bemuse, Climbing, Uplands Lad, Compensate, Top Liner and Daysun which ran in close order. In the next furlong, when the pace eased. Biltong dashed ahead. In no time Biltong ran well clear. With six furlongs to go he was out by four lengths from Chatsmore, Bemuse. Uplands Lad. Climbing, Woodlore and Sigh improving. Sigh began to close on Biltong as they neared the straight and starting the ran home she went clear.
