Womens Softball Monowai One Of Two Unbeaten Teams

DUNEDIN, December 26. At the end of die first day's play in the New Zeeland in-ter-club womens softball championships. Monowai (Christchurch) and Broadway (Wellington* are the only unbeaten teams. Most teams seemed to be taking time to settle into good combinations with the exception of Monowai and Hagley. which gave polished displays Hagley was three up. three down when B. Makmson. of Monowai, hit on. She advanced to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice bunt by N. B Beal. With two awav in the next, J. Timms, of Hagley. hit on. but to no avail when the next batter was forced out. Monowai replied. and when the first batter was caught out. L. Leask made first safely on an error and in stealing to second she caused an error which allowed her to score. Jan Irving was the only Haglev batter who hit on in the third but the side was scoreless Monowai. scoreless in reply, held Hagiey to the count with a runner on third. Monowai failed because of a force-out and a double play between J. Timms, M and J. Gaskell. Errors allowed Hagley to open its account in the fifth when J. Gaskell scored Monowai failed to add to its score because of a catch and a double play between L. Honeyman and M. Gaskell. Hagley, three up. three down in the sixth, held Monowai scoreless. Hagley. trailing by one run .was three up. three down for Monowai to win without batting its last, 2-1. after an exciting game Ellis Park Beaten After holding Monowai to three runs till the third while
it scored two runs. El lie Park watched some strong batting by Monowai bring in five runs, including a home run by M. Hapuku in the fourth. Errors allowed another runner home for Monowai in the fifth and more strong batting brought in five runa in its sixth with M. Hapuku hitting a two-base hit. In the corresponding innings. Ellis Parks only score came from a good three-base hit from Y Clyma In its last it was three up. three down. B Makinaon pitched well for Monowai for six strikeouts and M Hapuku was responsible for some good outs. Monowai won. 14-3 Hagley was scoreless In its first against Rajahs but for which J. Batchem and S. La.ng scored two runa. With strong batting Hagley completely upset the Rajahs teem to score 19 runs Rajahs, after a good first innings, found it hard to penetrate the Hagley field and only scored one run before the last out wee made.
