ATHLETICS Halberg And Snell In Form At Waimate

There was a galaxy of athletic stars at the Waimate Caledonian Society’s annual sports meeting at the Waimate Domain yesterday, but for the thousands who crowded the picturesque ground the main interest was in the appearance of the Olympic champions, M. G. Halberg and P. G. Snell.

Snell ran in the half mile and mile and Halberg took part in the two miles. It was their first competitive track running of the season and both were delighted with their performances. Oft scratch in the half mile Snell had to concede huge handicaps to several athletes capable of breaking two minutes. Most’ of these failed to produce current form, with the exception of D. Beauchamp, a former Canterbury representative, and S. Payne, the young Christchurch Technical runner. Snell, with his strong, aggressive style, gathered Un most of the field after 700 yards and with 100 yards remaining it was a question of whether he could overhaul Beauchamp, who was striding in front without any signs of fatigue. Snell closed the gap, but Beauchamp called on all his recources to break the tape first, four yards ahead of Snell. Beauchamp, off 25 yards, recorded Imin 51.1 sec and Snell returned a very satisfactory time of Imin 51.4 sec. Payne, off 40 yards, finished with a determined burst for a meritorious third place. It was a similar story in the mile with Snell conceding what appeared insurmountable handicaps to runners such as B. J. Molloy and Beauchamp. But this time Snell could not be headed and after a tremendous last lap in which he passed at least a dozen struggling runners he came into the straight with only J. Simpson in front of him. Snell unleashed a great burst of speed which took him past Simpson as if he were standing still and Snell won by 12 yards. His time of 4min 16.4 sec for his first track mile this season was an excellent effort

Halberg’s Power Halberg gave a grand demonstration of power running in the two miles. Like Snell he was opposed by runners who were generously handicapped. Indeed, the front marker had a lead of almost a lap and even the indomitable A. Potts, of Dunedin. had a start of 85 yards. It looked as if Potts was determined to keep his lead too. for he ran the first five laps at a very fast clip. Halberg gradually narrowed the gap, passing several runners in the process, and his first mile was run in 4min 28sec Halberg applied the pressure in the last half mile but ■with 130 yards to go Potts and R. Ibbotson were both in front of him and running without distress. Then Halberg produced his typical finishing burst and within a distance of 40 yards he had passed the two leaders and in the final burst for the tape he increased his lead to win by several yards. His time of Bnrin 48.4 sec was only 7.Bsee outside his national record. Another Auckland athlete who impressed was the versatile D. Norris, who junroed a few inches short of 23ft in the long jump and who held off Canterbury's A. G. Steel in the 220 yards to win in 22.25ec. Undoubtedly one of the country's best athletes. Norris gave a grand performance in the 100 vards and although he and Steel were narrowly beaten otrt of a place because of their handacaos they were separated by inches only at the finish, two yards behind the winner. D Samways, off five yards, who recorded 98sec Javelin Reeord The local athlete. M. Stewart, was given a special chew from the spectators when he broke the New Zealand junior javelin record of 208 ft 4in with a throw of 222 ft Tin. Stewart bettered the national reeord a few weeks ago at a Waimate meeting, but because his throwing did not meet all the requirement* of the New

Zealand centre his record was not ’ put forward for national recognition. But the officials made certain that all the requirements were fulfilled yesterday and there is no doubt that bis throw will become the new record. Miss D. Porter of Auckland, the national sprint champion, won the women’s 75 yards and 100 yards and was second in the 220 yards. In the shorter races Miss Porter had a great tussle with Miss N. Bond, of Otago. Only inches separated them at the tape in the 75 yards and 100 yards, but in the 220 yards Miss Porter found Miss L. Anderson's handicap of nine yards too much of an obstacle and Miss Anderson won by two yards in 25.35ec. Athletic results were:— MEN 100 Yards.—First heat: B. T. Potts (7yds) 1, L.
