Australia 27, YZ. 24 (N.Z. Press Association) PALMERSTON N„ Dec. 26 The Australian speedway team beat New Zealand by 27 points to 24 at the Palmers on North Show Grounds tonight. The racing was cons dered to be of world class Australia took an early. 8-4 lead, but a brilliant ride by B. Clements and J. Laurie put New Zealand back into the picture. With one event to go. New Zealand was in the lead bv one point. 23-22. Laurie had crashed earlier and was in hospital with suspected fractured ribs. The riders in the nominated riders event, the final race, were C. Taylor (Aust. No. 4). R. Sharp (Aust. No. I>. M Dunn (N.Z. No D.and B Clements (N.Z No. 3). New Zealand needed three points to secure a win. The Australians took the lead from the start and just as the New Zealanders began to make up the lee-way, Dunn was forced to retire with engine trouble. Clements set out in a screaming ride to gain first place in the last two laps but in spite of a brilliant ride made only third place. The individual scores were:— Australia: R Sharp 7. P Moore 4. A Lawson 2, C Taylor 13, R South (reserve) 1 New Zealand: M. Dunn 6. W. Andrews 2. B Clements 12. J. Laurie 2. B. Subritzki (reserve) 2. Total. Australia 27. New Zealand 24.
