CRICKET Rain Delays Play In Second Test

JOHANNESBURG, December 26. New Zealand spent a frustrating morning at the Wanderers’ Club ground this morning, when the second test against South Africa began. J. R. Reid lost the toss, and by lunch, with play twice interrupted by rain, South Africa had scored 80 for one wicket. New Zealand had an early success, with the dismissal of the South African captain, D. J. McGlew, but the other opening batsman, E. J. Barlow, mixed some strokes of power and style with others which were purely fortuitous. He was dropped once, and on three other occasions eluded the slips by minute margins.

The teams are. — New Zealand.—J. R. Reid .-aptain), G. T. Dowling, P. T. Barton, R. C. Motz, A. E. Dick, F. J. Cameron J. C. Alabaster. S. N. McGregor. J. W. Guy, G. A. Bartlett, P. G. Z. Harris. South Africa.—D. J. McGlew (captain). E. J. Barlow. J. H. B. Waite. R. A. McLean. K. C. Bland. K. Elgie. S. O’Linn. P. M. Pollock, G. B. Lawrence K. A. Walter, H. D. Bromfield. On a cool, rather dark morning, Motz and Bartlett each began with an impressive first over, and Barton also distinguished himself

with a magnificent diving save in the gully. But Motz's second over cost runs, with Barlow scoring a bizarre sort of boundary Motz had a heavily packed off-side field, and was clearly determined to bowl to it—so determined that he bowled Barlow what might well have been a wide, had the batsman not pursued it well outside his off stump and cut it to the toundary at third man. After the second over, a shower began, but there was no immediate prospect of the rein interrupting play. McGlew played an authoritative shot or two, and Bar--I'w turned Motz nicely for four, but he was fortunate when he edged one from Motz over the head of third slip for another.

Barlow continued to score with unusual speed for the start of a test innings, but Motz twice beat McGlew in an over, and on the second occasion had him out. leg before wicket. The total then was 25 Waite was hardly in before he gave Sparling substituting for McGregor, an extremely sharp chance in the gully, which the fieldsman did well to make into a catch. After Waite had played a couple of good-looking and fruitful strokes, Motz had the mortification of seeing Barlow dropped in the slips by Alabaster. It came to Alabaster at waist height and the fieldsman juggled with the ball before it fell Barlow celebrated his escape by setting out after another very wide one from Bartlett and thumping it through the covers for 4. the stroke of a man who clearly felt it was his day It certainly seemed to be. for his next positive action was an which gave him another four over the slips. A moment later he cut Bartlett properly and profitably—the third boundary in the over When Waite turned Motz for three. South Africa was 52 in 47 minutes, with light rain still falling At 54, Cameron came on for Bartlett, and half-way through the over the players were driven from the field by heavier rain. It was 25 minutes before they returned Cameron bowled well when the game was resumed but Waite hit two bad balls from Reid calmly and perfectly tor tours. There was another interruption through rain with the

score at 80 in 75 minutes, and no further play was possible before lunch. Scores.— SOUTH AFRICA First laaiasi D. J. McGlaw, lbw, b Mots » E 4. Barlow, not out .. *• 4. H. B. Walts. Mt out .. 33 Extras .. 3 Total for ons wbt. .. Sb FaU of wtebots: ono for W.
