SEARCH BY STEWARDS

“Forerunners Of Others”

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 20. The surprise search by the Victoria Racing Club stewards for batteries at the Caulfield race track yesterday almost certainly was a forerunner of a series of similar raids, and other new types of stewards’ investigations. according to the "Melbourne Age” racing correspondent. No official announcement has been made to this effect, but it is understood there is a general “tightening up” policy in progress, he aays. Yesterday four VJLC. stewards conducted a full-acale search of the clothing and gear of about SO jockeys riding work at Caulfield. After the search, which lasted about two hours, the stewards reported that no batteries or any other illegal contrivances bad been found. Hie stewards said they were acting in continuance of their inquiry into the finding of a battery at Caulfield racecourse on November 24. They said that they were following a direction from the Victoria Racing Club committee to carry out a full investigation to find what use. if any. was being made of batteries at race meetings and training -tracks. It now appears most likely that other similar unheralded raids will be made at other training tracks, the writer says.
