SEARCH FOR BATTERIES

Stewards’ Raid At Caulfield fN.Z. Press Assn. — Copyright) MELBOURNE, Dec. 19. Four Victoria Racing Club stipendiary stewards swooped on the Caulfield training tracks today looking for batteries. They searched clothing. saddles and whips of about 50 riders, but found nothing. It was the first mass training track raid by stewards looking for batteries in the history of Victorian racing. The raid lasted for two hours. The four stewards, including the chairman, Mr J. J. Ahern, worked together. They searched the riders in the sheds where the horses are prepared for track work. The raid came after the finding of a large battery at Caulfield the day before the Eclipse Stakes. The battery was near the nine furlongs post. An investigation was opened and some days ago the V.R.C. detective, Mr F. O. Harding, was called in to assist in the case. The inquiry has not been completed.
