ADDINGTON MARKET Store Lambs Continue To Sell Well; Fat Cattle Improve

Although store lambs were yarded in very much greater numbers at Addington Market yesterday they were in strong demand at rates very close to those ruling at the two previous sales. Fat cattle, which were yarded in fairly moderate numbers for a pre-Christmas market, recovered some ground. Steers were 50s to 60s dearer, heifers appreciated by up to 40s, and better cows were firm to 40s dearer.

All classes of fat lambs sold under very keen competition. Heavier lambs, which were at a discount last week, improved by 4s or 5s a head. Fat sheep met a limited inquiry, and all classes were easier. Hoggets and wethers dropped 4s or ss. The next market at Adington win be held on January 9. This will mark the beginning of the two-day sales.

STORE SHEEP The feature of the much larger selection of store lambs was the steady demand at rates little inferior to those recently paid. The store sheep entry totalled 7579 head. compared with 2752 last week, and included 6147 store lambs (1218 last week), 1109 store hoggets (1013). 115 ewes and Lambs (163), 188 older ewes (358) and 20 wethers (nil). The lamb offering, which was easily the biggest so far this season, contained a very good selection. The sale was followed by a very large gallery and right throughout values were very similar to the good rates of the last two sales, with medium lambs looking to be relatively dearer than the tops of the entry. There was an almost complete clearance of the offering. The best of the lambs made from 28s to 33s 6d, with average to good from 22s to 275. and small and light from Ils to 17s. The top price of the day was 33s 6d for the tops of a big offering of Southdown and South Suffolk cross lambs from H. L. Scott (Godley Heads). Sixty-three Down cross lambs from J. W. Mosley (Scargill) realised 31s 6d and the same price was paid for 92 Romney cross wether lambs from Purau Station (Pu rau). Corriedale wether lambs fetched to 27s for the tops of an offering from G. C. Hiatt (Domett), and halfbred wether lambs from Barton Bros. (Birdling’s Flat) made to 27s 6d. Sales included:— Pyne. Gould, Guinness Ltd., sold: on account of G. C. The hogget sale tended to be easier than last week’s sale by possibly 3s or 4s. with sales harder to make and some passings. Fine wood wether hoggets predominated in the selection, and sold mainly from about 30s to 365, with a sprinkling of better hoggets selling at 38s to 41s.

FAT SHEEP The fat sheep entry of 3217 head, compared with 3246 last week, was not particularly large for a pre-holiday market, but it was obvious from the beginning that the demand for both ewes and wethers w r as limited. There was little, if any, works competition. Quality was generally fair. Ewes opened at Is 8d cheaper than last week’s lower rates, and for average to indifferent types the market remained at Is 6d to 2s cheaper throughout. An occasional high quality pen of sheep, however, brought prices in advance of average rates. There was a good selection of hoggets, but here values were sharply easier by 4s to 5s on last week’s better sale. Heavier noggets were in very limited demand and were specially hard to sell. Toward the end of the day many pens of excellent sheep failed to attract the slightest interest. Right throughout the market there was an erratic tone about the hogget sale. The wether market, for which there was only a small selection, also had an erratic tone, with the trend of the market being similar to that for hoggets. but with a few good sales being made. Hoggets sold to 55s Id for 19 from R. H. Maidens (Lauriston). Sales at 52s Id included the tops of a line of 60 from W. Winchester. jun. (Lakeside) which sold from 50s Id, 16 from A. W. Taylor (Winchmore), whose line of 135 averaged 50s and for the tops of entries of F. H. Robson. (Lincoln) and an unspecified Darfield vendor, G. J- Francis (Halswell), T. A. Adams (Sheffield), Waituna Farm, Ltd. (Waikari) and L. Law (Pendarves) received 51s Id. In the wether section G. J. Francis received 51s Id and Halswell Farm (Halswell) was paid 48s Id for nine. Apart from 14 hatf-woolled ewes from G. J. Giddings (Greendale), which sold for 24s Id. N. R. Wilkinson and Son (Cheviot) had 10 at 19s Id; E. J. Inch (Rangiora), 16 at 18s Id, C. and P. Morrison (Culverden) the tops of a line at the same price, and J. W. Mosley (Scargill) and R. J. Whyte (Scargill) received to 17s Id. Values were:— Prime heavy hoggets. 50s Id to 55s Id. The only bright spot was the small and unfinished types of porkers, which showed little change in values compared with last week. Choppers were in medium supply, out with only two buyers operating values eased by 20s to 30s a head. The bacon entry was of medium size and included two trucks from the West Coast. Here again with most buyers out of the market values were easier by up to 10s per head. Values were:— Light and unfinished porkers, £6 12s 6d to £7 9s 6d. Medium porkers. £7 14s 6d to £8 4s 6d. Heavy porkers, £8 2s 6d to £9 Is 6d. Chopers, £8 Is to £l3 3s 6d. Light and medium baconers, £lO 2s 6d to £ll 12s 6d. Heavy baconers, £ll 9s 6d to £l2 9s 6d. STORE PIGS No doubt due to the good prices ruling last week the store pig section was considerably larger. The attendance of buyers was much smaller and there was an easing in values of 5s to 10s a head, except in the case of medium and large stores which practically maintained last week s rates. Values were:— Small weaners, 45s to 655. Best weaners, 85s to £5 ss. Slips, £5 3s to £5 10s. Small and medium stores, £5 15s to £6 ss. Large stores, £6 15s to £7 ss.
