Studio And Burgos Attract Interest

“The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, December 19. The visiting horses, Burgos, Compensate and Studio, from Canterbury, attracted keen interest when they worked at Ellerslie this morning. Each went nicely but it was Catania, from much closer at hand, which stole the show with a good mile.

Catania is a Takandni filly in the Great Northern Derby at Ellerslie on Tuesday, one of the events at tihe Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting tor which Burgos is also a candidate.

Compensate and Studio are on hand mainly for the Auckland Cup, but in the meantime they will compete on Tuesday in the Christmas Handicap (Studio) and the Queen Elizabeth Handicap. The plough as well as the course proper 45 feet out, where Catania and the other three galloped, were both available for fast work and provided very quick footing. Ridden by G. F. Hughes, who will be on her in the Derby, Catania led Burgos (Wyatt) by a length with Studio (Forbes) close behind Burgos at the finish of a mile in Iman 48sec. The first half was run slowly

and the second a great deal better in 53sec. Cantania travelled easily on the inside of tihe other two until the bast furlong or so and then came away galloping well! within herself. She blew after the run and that decided her trainer, R. C. Verner, to try her again at speed at the week-end. Burgos went lazily, which is usual for him in his training work. Toward the finish Wyatt had to show him a stick to keep him going. Studio, on the other hand, went freely and came to the post under a nice hold.

Both Studio and Burgos, which are in the care of G. S. Barr, arrived tired last week after their long trip north but they recovered quickly and have thrived. Wyatt will ride Burgos in the Derby and Forbes will be on Studio in the Christmas Handicap. Solid Effort Compensate (L. Stock' covered a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec. a solid effort considering he went alone. For the last half he was timed to go 52 4-ssec. , He began from ,the mile post on the bend into the back straight. The next time Compensate goes fast in his work will most likely be on Sunday He has settled in well to his new surroundings and has a form background that is making him one of the respected horses for the big events that will be decided during the next fortnight.

Commodore Roberts (Hughes), a stablemate of Catania, strode easily from the seven furlongs and ran the last five in Imin 6sec. For the last four he returned 52sec.

Rock of Alarm (G. Ritchie), one of the well-regarded candidates for the Christmas Handicap on Tuesday, did six furlongs smoothly with Royal Dee (F. Ritchie) in Imin 19 4-ssec. Gullfax (Mudford) sprinted half a mile freely in 50sec. Redspot (Mudgway) travelled easily over the same ground in 52sec. On The Plough On the plough, which was very dry, impressive work was done by Dry Martini. Blyton and Romance. Dry Martini (Hooten) and Romance (Mudttord) kept together while running five furlongs in Imin 3 3-ssec, .the last three in 38sec. Dry Martini seems to be on the improve again. He is in the Christmas Handicap on Tuesday and Romance is being kept for the second day on Thursday.

Blyton (Mudford) had the edge on Golden Spray (G. Ritchie) while sprinting three furlongs in 36 4-ssec in preparation for the Good wood Stakes. Blyton worked attractively. She is one of several good two-year-old fillies in the Auckland district. Katmandu (Mudford) dashed over three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. He is the unraced two-year-old gelding by Alphenhom from Glitterwings in K. J. Heaton's team. Mali (Hoofon) went five furlongs in imin 4 l-ssec. Eisteddfod (Hughes) was never at top over five furlongs in Imin Bsec. He seems improved by racing at Pukekohe. The Robinson Handicap on the first day is among several good hack engagements that he has at the Auckland meeting. Carolyn Anne (Mudford), which is a doubtful starter in the Newmarket Handicap on Tuesday, did half a mile with So Few (G. Ritehie) in 48 3-ssec.

Forever -(Mudford) easily beat Hearth Money (medium weight) over half a mile ini 48 l-ssec. My Sister (Bennett) led By Word (F. Ritchie) over the last halfmile of their work in 49 3-ssec. Te Auamutu Work "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Dec; IB Ait Te Awamutu yesterday the well-performed visiting Auckland Cup candidates, Llanmai (from Wingatai) and Moy (from Hastings), continued their preparations in pleasing style. Working 25 feet out on the course proper, Llsnmai (Anderton) covered five furlongs effortlessly in Imin 2sec. He looked in capital condition for his holiday racing. In the meantime he is in the Waipa Turf Plate at Te Awamutu on Saturday, an event for which Moy is also an acceptor. Moy yesterday travelled easily to the three,, furlongs *nd sprinted home ‘£r SBeec.
