RESEARCH I APPEAL f
Uncollected I Envelopes Uncollected gift envelope* for the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation’s city appeal should now be sent to the appeal secretary at P.O. Box 2682, Christchurch, the secretary (Mr C. L. Bacon) said yesterday. Although the collectors had done their work well, there were cases in which householders had not been found at home, he explained. The amount collected so far in the appeal was £7095 14s lid. said Mr Bacon. This included contributions from 14 new life members and about 570 new annual subscribing members. The cost of the appeal would bring the net result down to something over £6OOO, so that the capital of the foundation, with money previously held, wai now about £lO.OOO. “This is disappointingly low. The target aimed at was an income of £5OOO yearly, and the income from annual subscribers and from interest on capital will be no more than about £l7OO a year.” said Mr Bacon. ”1 think the foundation will probably not, however, make any new city appeal on the same lines, but use all its resources to keep a worthwhile research effort going until the economic climate improves and the Government is able to implement its election promise to give taxation relief on gifts for medical research. It is then the major appeal for £lOO,OOO will be launched." The president of the foundation (Dr. L. C. L~ Averill) gave his “sincere’ personal thanks” to all who had contributed to the appeal, and in particular to those who had given so much time and trouble to issuing and collecting the envelopes.
