Spelling

Sir. —Could I voice some support for Mr T. Haughton, headmaster of Burnside primary school, in his remarks about the ridiculous manner in which some words are spelt in the English language. These remarks were made by him in a very fine and learned address given by him at the annual prize-giving. Surely in the

light of the vast extension of fields of knowledge which fully taxes the mind of the modern child, he should be spared the necessity to learn that flem is spelt “phlegm,” bom is spelt “bomb,” and nite is spelt “night”? It takes the initiative of a man like Mr Haughton to wake us up and get us out of the rut we have been in too long. Now that the metric system is likely to be introduced it would be timely for an enterprising Government also to have the dictionary revised and introduce a “fonetik” one. There are more important avenues of learning for today’s children.—Yours, etc., CBAI. December 15, 1961.
