JUNIOR STRING QUARTET
Test Piece For Contest The test piece for the 1962 junior string quartet contest has been ehanged from the Schubert Quartet, opus 168, to the Beethoven Quartet in G, opus 18, No. 2. according to Mr C. D. M Simpson, secretary to the committee organising the contest. The committee had been told that the Schubert Quartet could be obtained from Britain by December but found that it was out of print, he said. A feature of the contest is that the Federation of Chamber Music Societies will conduct master classes at Victoria University for the winners of each of the regional contests. These contests will be held from May 7 to 12 and the final contest will be held on May 12. The tutors chosen for the master classes are the American ’cellist, Victor Gottlieb, his wife. Eudice Shapiro, a violinist, and Glynne Adams, a violinist with the National Orchestra. Mr Gottlieb and his wife are the founders of the American Arts Quartet. They are both on the staff of the Epsom Music School. Los Angeles, and Miss Shapiro is head of the violin department of the University of Southern California. Mr Gottlieb is at present the principal cellist with the Festival Orchestra and the Casals Festival Orchestra held annually in Puertp Rica. The judge chosen for the contes. is Professor P.
