Harbour Launch For Gisborne

One of the smartest new harbour vessels to visit Lyttelton for some time, the new 10-knot cWesel launch. Hikurangi, called at Lyttelton on Saturday evening, on its delivery voyage from her builders (Messrs Miller and Tunnage. Ltd.. of Port Chalmers) to her owners, the Gi’borne Harbour Board. The Hikurangi. which is under the command of the Gisborne harbourmaster (Captain I. H Mcßae), has a crew of five for the voyage. including the master, and she has already made a brief call at Timaru. Of 450 horse-power, the Hikurangi is 55 feet in length with a beam of 17 feet, and was designed by AtholBurns. of Wellington. According to Captain Mcßae, she is "apable of cruising for about 89 hours without refuelling The Hikurangi, which takes its name from a well known mountain, just north of Gisborne, has been built to replace the 40-year-old launch. Takitimu. Fittings, appointments and accommodation are of the highest standard and she is decked with teak of two inch thickness. Her hull, also two inches in thickness, is of kauri. The diesel engine can be directly controlled from the spacious wheelhouse, and navigational aids such as clear-view screen and radiotelephone are fitted.
