POOLS OPEN TO ALL

Decision In Salisbury SALISBURY (Rhodesia). December 16. Salisbury City Council decided yesterday that all swimming baitbs in the municipal area will be open to all races. It adopted a resolution to this effect at a special meeting caled by the Mayor (Mr Ivor Pitch) who earlier closed three baths in white areas of the city after the Supreme Court ruled racial discrimination illegal. All the baths were open to all races when the season opened, but after brawls at “whites only” bathe the City Council decided to reserve baths for "customary users." The High Court upheld an Indian’s objection to this action and the council’s appeal against that decision was dismissed by the Supreme Court last Wednesday. After yesterday’s meeting Mr Pitch said; “The council has taken the only decision it could under the lew. bin it disapproves of multiracial swimming in principle and whether the public wiH approve remains to be seen."
