SAFETY IN INDUSTRY
NX “Has Long Way To Go” (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 17. Although the slogan "Safety in Industry” is as familiar in New Zealand as in Britain, the United States and Canada. New Zeeland still has a long way to go to match the achievements of these countries, says the latest issue of "Safety News,” the newsletter of the National Safety Association. Eighty-five per cent of New Zealand industry is composed of units of from one to 20 employees, and this is where inefficiency is most prominent: it is also the group in which most of toe accidents occur, says the newsletter. The article points out that it is just as important to select and train suitable men for the responsibilities in production as in administration. There is far too much evidence of workers being appointed to supervise with little more than a handshake and a smile and “best of luck, old chap.” from toe manager. "This has meant nothing more than promotion into a rat-race and being burdened with frustration and worry, simply because they haven’t been eqipped with the knowhow to control, plan and organise efficiently,” says the article.
