AUSTRALIAN INTEREST
First National Regatta Australian roving circles had been impressed with the New Zealand custom of holding regattas on a national basis. For the first time Australia would hold one at Easter, at Ballarat, said the manager of the Australian tourists (Mr G. E. Mclntyre) after the third international test, on Saturday. Rowing in Australia did not attract a large following, as it had to compete with surfing. There were only 45 to 50 clubs in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland.
It was necessary to do something to Stimulate more interest m rowing. Australian officials felt that holding national regattas or the development of an outstanding club would be steps towards obtaining wider interest, he said. ,
