REARING OF CALVES
Ciarkville Boy Wins Cup Eleven-year-old Ross Millar, of Ciarkville School, with his five-and-a-half-month-old Friesian calf, won the annual calf-rearing competition for the Tai Tapu Central Dairy Company’s Challenge Cup at Addington Show Grounds. This year’s competition—the twenty-eighth for the trophy—attracted 34 entries from 16 school* and was considered to be of record size. Children with the top calves in the boys’ and girls’ agricultural club groups come forward to this competition, which is open to schools throughout the Canterbury Education Board’s district. The calves are judged for leading and handling, care and attention and dairy type. Their exhibitors were also awarded points tor their record books. “It is not necessarily the best calf that wins thi cup.” said Mr B. B. Blackmore, chief agricultural instructor to the Education Board. “We are rather trying to assess what toe child has done for the calf rather than what the calf is.” Helen Martyn, of Rangiora, who was third, was awarded a possible marie of 20 for her record book, which Mr Blackmore said he was unable to fault. Illustrated with snapshots and diagrams, her book was a comprehensive account of her calf* life and the technique* of calf-rearing. Mr J. W. Rainey, a member of the board of directors of the Tai Tapu Central Dairy Company, presented the trophy. Placings in the competition were:— Ross Miller, 92 % points, 1; Yvonne Adams (Leeston), »»i point*, 2; Helen Martyne (Rangiora), 901* point*, 3; Esme Williams (Ohoka), 87 points, 4; Tony Tyson (Ciarkville), 86% points, 5; Brian Crossan, 85 points, 6; Alastair Millar (Ohoka), 84 points, 7; Bruce Lassen (Greenpark), Roydon Anderson (Belfast) and Malcolm Boal (Leeston), 83 points (equal) 8.
