In the second - round matches in the Shirley club’s singles championships, D. Duggan, with a fine display of drawing, led A. Horsfall throughout for a well-earned victory. Almost immediately after, Horsfall played J. O. Thompson on the other side of the draw. Horsfall was behind on points until he drew level on the eighth end. when Thompson threw up a loose pack and lost his length. The scoring was still close at the twenty-first end, but Horsfall held on to win by two. Entries for the West Coast Centre’s annual tournament close on Monday, January 15. The tournament begins at Greymouth on February 19. with three days of section play. The post-section play is on February 22 and 23. The first round of the Sumner club’s champion pairs has now been completed. One of
the surprises was the elimination of last year’s winning pair, G. Hammond and M. G. Main, by the runners-up, J. Christie and C. H. Poole. W. Bailley’s and A. Salmons’s win over T. Steele and J. Edmonds in the St. Albans club’s champion pairs, although meritorious, was most unexpected. Entries for the three-bowl open pairs and open singles competitions close on Monday, December 18. The pairs will be played on February 3, 10 and 17 and the singles on January 31 and February 7. Special parking arrangements are being made at the Shirley club for the Dominion tournament next month An enclosed grass area to accommodate 100 cars In Richmond Park is being made available by the reserves department of the Christchurch City Council. F. Sheard, of Maddison Trophy fame, has entered for the Dominion championships next month. A former member of the Woolston club, he is at present living at Greenmeadows, Hawke’s Bay. The construction of the Beckenham club’s new pavilion was hindered by indifferent weather in the early stages, but it will be ready for the Dominion tournament next month. Last year’s champion pairs, F. Barnard and J. Miles, have already been eliminated from the Spreydon club's current championship. In a recent match, J. Boswell and T. Willoughby were too good for Barnard and Miles and provided an excellent exhibition of combined bowling and tactical skill. The R.S.A. club’s recent annual charity tournament raised £lOO for the Canterbury branch of the Intellectually Handicapped Children’s Parents’ Association. The money was raised from entry fees, donations and from an auction of goods. The tournament was organised by the club’s tournament secretary, Mr W. Trott, and Mr C. L. Spearman conducted the auction.
