Attempt To Stop Melting Of Tar In Memorial Av.

Engineers and contractors for Memorial avenue are making tests on the road surface there to find some way of stopping the surface tar from melting in hot weather, according to Mr N. S. Sutherland, engineer tor the Bumside Road Memorial Highway ■ committee. “There has been some bother with ’bleeding’ of tar .there,” said Mr Sutherland, “and the matter is being disl cussed with the contractors now. They have been spreading grit on the surface in the hope that it will adhere to the tar. “We are not quite sure of the cause of the melting surface and we are having tests made. But the hardest thing to do is to correct it.” A complaint made to “The Preus’’ by Mr L W. Broadhead, of 53b Memorial avenue, about the effect grit was having on his lawn outside his fence was referred to the Waimairi County Council. Mr K. Madachlan. the County Clerk, said he could not comment, because the council had not yet accepted dedication of the road, and responsibility for it rested with the Burnside road Memorial Highway Committee. Mr Broadhead said he had

been troubled by tihe condition of Memorial avenue for several months when the road surface was being formed. “Residents did not mind that because they knew they were going to get a good highway,” he said. “We were told to look after the verges and make the road attractive, and I spent a lot of time and money on the grass verge outside my fence. “But for weeks now the road surface above Clyde road has been melting on every hot day, and the shingle that is spread on it is thrown up by pa cing cars on to my grass verge. “I bought a new lawnmower last year, and I have had to have it sharpened twice recently, at 12s 6d a time, because of the stones on the grass. The contractors sweep the shingle back on to the road, and that creates a dust which gets into the house and settles on the blinds and curtains.” Mr Broadhead’said he had to brush his lawn with a broom before he could mow it. “Fifty per cent, of the residents in Memorial avenue couldn't care less, because they don't cut their lawns, anyway,” he said. “But those of us who do have to put up with email stones all over the grass.”
