Magistrate’s Court Licence Cancelled For Exceeding Speed Limit

A fine of £5 and cancellation of his driver’s licence for three months were imposed on Dennis John Alsoip, aged 18, a grocer, when he appeared before Mr A. P. Blair, SAI., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour in Office road on October 14. Alsop, who admitted the charge, was represented by Mr R. W. Edgley. Chief Patrol Officer J. Brown, who prosecuted for the Christchurch City Council, said that the defendant was checked by Traffic Officer F. Stout at 50 miles an hour in Office road at 11 pm on October 14. He made no excuse for his speed. He said that Alsop had two previous convictions for speeding. Mr Edgley asked that Alsop be given another chance as he needed his licence for work and also to drive his father about. He said that when the traffic officer stopped Alsop he said “good driving.” The Magistrate suggested that perhaps the traffic officer was being sarcastic, but Mr Edgley said he understood it to be meant as a compliment. 21 TRAFFIC CONVICTIONS A 19-year-old youth, who was described by Chief Patrol Officer Brown as a “real problem,” was fined £1 on a charge of failing to keep his car up to warrant of fitness standard. Chief Patrol Officer Brown said that the youth, Barry James Robin, had 21 convictions for traffic offences over the last two years and paid out £76 in fines during this period. "Robin just keeps on offending,” he said. After hearing evidence from Traffic Officer A. Laing, who examined Robin’s car in Manchester street on August 12. that the car was in a dangerous condition, the Magistrate said he would consider taking away Robin’s licence. Chief Patrol Officer Brown said that the defendant’s licence had been cancelled by Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., two weeks ago. He said he did not expect any trouble from Robin for at least 12 months “I will treat this as a wadhing-up charge,” said the Magistrate imposing the fine Robin did not appear and was not represented by counsel. CHARGE DISMISSED A charge of cycling without a rear light in Edgeware road at 65 pm. on June 14 against George Fitzharding Jones was dismissed. On a further charge of having no front light he was convicted and discharged. Jones pleaded not guilty to both charges. He was not represented by counsel.
