Prizes Presented At Selwyn House School

Parents in search of a "purely materialistic education for their children in this age of horrid mediocrity” would not find this at any school run by the P.N.E.U. movement, said the principal of Selwyn House (Mrs F, Miller) in her annual report presented at the school prize-giving yesterday. At the present it was even more important that the school tried to seek the highest standards in all aspects of its curriculum. "We do in fact have to mm fantastically high to maintain our beliefs. We will never seek anything but the best,” she said. But although the school set out to develop the whole and individual personality of each child, this did not necessarily discount the need for equally high standards of personal home training, said Mrs Miller Such responsibility in New Zealand was too much left to the schools without sufficient emphasis on the parents' task in child upbringing Particularly at Selwyn House it was essential to have an informed nucleus of parents following closely the interests of the school During the last veer the interest shown in P.N E.U. work had been pleasing. Mrs Miller said. During she coming vear it was hoped to followup the idea of establishing study groups among parents to discuss further this relationship The question of selected children being promoted ahead of their contemporaries was also discussed by Mrs Miller. It was not only sufficient for a child to have superior academic ability, but an accompanying maturity of thought and good mental dexterity, she said. Outlining the year's achievements at the school Mrs Miller said that it was essential for the school to expand. Of first priority was undoubtedly a new hostel—-

at an estimated cost of £BOOO —and a new art room to replace the existing 100-year-old room which was "utterly inadequate.” Other speakers at the ceremony were the chairman of the school board of governors (Mrs Somers Cox), and the president of the Py.EU. Association (Mr J Ward). This was followed by a short programme consisting of a humorous sketch presented in French by a group of form one pupils under the direction of their French teacher (Mrs J. C. Benson), and massed singing of Christmas carols. Afterwards guests inspected displays of academic, craft and needlework set out in the individual classrooms.
