POSTMASTER’S RETIREMENT
Mr J. M. Strachan, Of Sydenham Mir J. M. Strachan, who has been in charge of the Svdenhem Post Office since 1956. will retire from the department on December 22 after 41 years’ service. He commenced his service in the department as a temporary message bov at Gore on December 12. 1919. Mr Strachan became an exchange clerk in 1921. and was promoted to cadet at In~ vercargill in 1925. After serving as a cadet in Pembroke and Kaitangata. he was transferred to the North Island, where he worked in Ongarue, Taumarunui. and Clevedon. He returned to the Sottih Island, to Tapanui, in 1933. In 1935 Mr Strachan moved to Winton, in 1936 to Waimate, and later in the same year to Methven, and then back to Gore. Mr Strachan was promoted to senior telegraphist at Gore in April. 1939, and was seconded to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research in 1942. While serving with that department he assisted in scientific work connected with the war effort. He resumed with the Post Office in 1945 as a telegraphist at Christchurch. Mr Strachan was promoted to supervisor of the High street branch in 1948. and was transferred to Sydenham in 1954. Accident Casualties’ Condition Serious (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 12. The condition of all except one of the victims of Saturday afternoon’s accident at Johnsonville was serious. Wellington Hospital reported today. The condition of Catherine Mclntyre, aged 14, was fair and a little better. The others are Maria Collins, aged 15, Denise Hayward, aged 15, Carol Nichols, aged 15, Kenneth Coles, aged 16, and Barry Jeromson, aged 25.
