CHECK ON CARS

Drivers Without Licences More than 12 per cent of the drivers of 213 cars recently checked by the Transport Department did not have either drivers’ licences or warrants of fitness. This percentage was far too high, said the chief traffic officer of the department (Mr E. Wilson) yesterday. Mr Wilson said that mechanical defects in the cars cheeked had been fairly low, with faulty tyres being the main trouble. He said that in view of the large number of persons without drivers’ licences or warrants the department would continue with its programme of spot checking cars.
