SENIOR CHRISTCHURCH MAGISTRATE TO RETIRE

The senate- Magistrate in Christchurch, Mr Raymond Ferner. S.M.. who will retire officially next September, will begin his retiring leave next Monday. Born on September 90, MB4, Mir Ferner attended the Mount, Albert School from IMO to 1806 and then went to the Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College. He wm admitted as a solicitor on March 18, I®l7, and ae a barrister on February 9, 1983. He served overseas in 1917 and 1918 and returned in March, U>lo, aod entered the legal profession. Mr Ferner took an active part tn municipal and local body affairs. After two years’ service as a councillor he was

elected Mayor of Mount Albert. He reorganised the borough finances and instituted practical measures for the relief of widespread unemployment. Residents expressed their appreciation by re-electing him unopposed in the 1935 election. In the same year Mr Ferner was elected to the Auckland Transport Board. For several years he was a member of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board

and a member of the executive of the Municipal Association of New Zealand. For many years Mr Ferner was elected annually as a director of the Community Sunshine Association, which was founded by hbs mother, the late Mrs Nellie Ferner. She was toe first wpmass Justice of toe peace in New Zeeland and was toe first woman justice to sit in toe CMldren’s Coart. Mr Ferner served fqr rtx years as a member os to* Owairoka School Committee and was a member of toe Board of Govewmre of toe Greymouth Technical College and ateo tba Wbangarei Boys’ High School. He was a member of the executive of toe Auckland Metropolitan Welfare Committee and president of numerous sports clubs. In 1036 Mr Ferner was appointed a stipendiary magistrate at Greymowth, and to 1940 be wae transferred to Whangerel. He wee ap*. pointed to CSirietribwreh to August. 1044, where he has served ever since. He became senior magistrate about 1064. Mr Ferner was married In 1923 to Mies Lauretta Isemonger.
