Oil Allowed To Escape In Port
For allowing oil to escape in Lyttelton Harbour on November 20, Lance Watson Evans, master of the Sydney Star, was fined £5O by Mr E. A. Lee. S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court at Lyttelton. Mr D. Woodward, .who represented Evans. said the escape of oil was “accidental and unfortunate.” Evans admitted the offence. The Magistrate said that because of the frequency of such offences heavier penalties might now be necessary. Penjamin Phillip Ornsby, a workman, of Lvttelton, who admitted assaulting an eight-year-old boy on October 18, was fined £2, Ornsby said the boy had thrown a lighted firework over the fence in the direction of his daughter. He reprimanded the boy, who used bad language. Ornsby became annoyed and slapped the boy on the face with his open hand. For being unlawfully on licensed premises, Davis Beattie and Basil Roland Bryant were each fined £3.
