Big Increase In Production
The number of cars assembled in New Zealand in 1960-61 increased from 24,434 to 29.888 according to a report from the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). Tffie average number of persons engaged in the industry rose by 424, or 18 per cent., and the overtime hours worked by wage earners increased by 71 per cent. The value of all units assembled, including commercial vehicles, was £27.8 million and the added value, or net output, was £6.4 million higher than in 1956-60. A further increase in the growth of the tyre retreading industry took place. In 1960-61 454.000 tyres were retreaded. This represents an increase of 20,000, or 4.5 per cent., over the number retreaded the previous year. The value of the output of New Zealand tyre-retreading establishments in the year was £2.4 million, added value amounting to £l3 million.
