The world was their “oyster” and they entered their career in a most exciting age, Sir Harry Platt, president of the International Federation of Surgical Colleges and a past president of the Royal College of Surgeons. London, told young doctors and dentists at their graduation ceremony today. In this second half of the twentieth century, medical and dental graduates would be called upon to play a larger role in their communities. said Sir Harry Platt. He commended their choice of career amid the strongly competing professions of today. ’The engineer, the nuclear scientist, and the accountant —I understand this is the triumvirate that will in future rule the world, ” he said. The medical and dental professions carried obligations which no othei professions had, and meant an arduous way of life. But the life was a process of continuous learning and there was no chance of succumbing to too much leisure, said Sir Harry Platt. Sir David Smith, chancellor o f the University of New Zealand. conferred the degrees, in the traditional and colourful academic ceremony which was held for the first time in the Otago University Union The Chancellor oi the University of Otago, the Rev H J Ryburn. presided, and the Vice-Chancellor. Dr F G. Soper, thanked Sir Harry Platt for the graduation address.
