Fish Marketing Policy
The Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) should publish the report of the inquiry conducted by Mr C. H. Benney into the marketing of fish in the Canterbury area. Mr Benney, a former Secretary of Mines, was appointed by the Government to inquire into a difference of opinion between wholesale and retail interests in the fish trade over marketing policy in the Canterbury area. Reporters were excluded from the inquiry, which was held in Christchurch last July; but various statements indicated the inter-
est of the public in the inquiry. A spokesman for the Canterbury Fish Retailers’ Association said at the time that it was hoped the inquiry would in better distribution of more fish, and consequently in reduced prices to the public. The price of fish in Canterbury was higher than in other areas, the spokesman said. The report apparently has been circulated to the trade. The Minister should see the undesirability of keeping from the public the report of an inquiry authorised by the Government into a matter in which the public interest is clear.
