INTER-CLUB REGATTA

Informal Races

The first inter-elu'o rowing of the season was held at Kerr’s Reach on Saturday, in a series of nine informal races. Performances generally were uneven, but the Union Rowing Club showed that it will be a force to be reckoned with later in the season. J. R. Little showed distinct promise as a single sculler in winning both the open and maiden sculls races. Union’s light-weight four and double sculls crews also raced very creditably. Avon’s No. 1 maiden four was another crew which took' the eye. and Canterbury's novice four was easily the best of a somewhat weak field. The surprise of the day was the decisive win by Union’s veteran senior four, comprising B. G. Knight and R. J. Shaw, who have come out of retirement this season. E. Akins, well known in recent years as an outstanding sculler, and T Thelning. The Canterbury four, which has been in strict training in the Canterbury provincial eight was favoured to win by a ccomfortable margin, but was unable to make any impression at any stage of the race.
