IRENE STACEY EVENT
Treleaven’s Fresco First Of Five I ' Irene Stacey Trophy, which once attracted the biggest R-class fleets in Canterbury and which was, itself, responsible for the conception of the R-class, yesterday musitered a "championship” fleet of only 11 entries—six of which withdrew before the finish. The trophy was won by the Christchurch club skipper. B. E. Treleaven. in Fresco, which led for moat of the long course charted on the Estuary. M. Seiwood was crew. The disappointing entry was matched only by a shockinglypoor start, a flukey easterly and an abnormally low high tide which was often not sufficient to keep plates from dragging on the mud. The present South Island class title-holder. G. S. Mander. beat tiie gun across the line and had to be recalled. Mander. with A. M. Holland as for’ard hand in Frenzy, to some extent made up for the lapse by sailing a fine race to make up time, ground, and position and come home second. At one stage he was running last more than a I minute behind Fresco. 1 Good performances were given in the initial stages of the race by D. Harrison s Retort and K. Tourell’s Beta, the latter leading on the first beat to the Sumner bar only to lose his place—and nearly capsize—after an unexpected knock-back near the shore. Harrison wa one of those who withdrew later in the race. Results were:— Fresco (B. E. Treleaven and M. Sei wood. Christchurch). 2138.12. 1: Frenzy (G. S. Mander and A. M. Holland. Canterbury). 2:41.40. 2: Beta (K. Tourell and I. W. Scott. Waimakariri). 2:41.58 3: Impetuous (B Taylor and A. McKeogh. Christchurch). 2:45.3. 4: Gazelle (R. Davis and R. Randall). 2:45-28. 5.
