PROGRESS OF N.Z. OPERA

New Conductor Impressed (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. Mr James Robertson, the English conductor who is to take up an appointment as musical director of the New Zealand Opera Company, is impressed with the progress of opera in New Zealand. A former conductor of the National Orchestra. Mr Robertson expressed the view when he reached Wellington tonight from overseas. Speaking of opera’s progress in New Zealand, he said: “I left it healthy in a sense, but would not have expected that in a country of just over two million people it should have reached such a stage.” Mr Robertson said he would be in charge of the new theatre orchestra which the Broadcasting Service would form, although he did not know when this would be. He had not done anything about engaging any players from overseas, he said. That could not be done till the contract was signed and al! New Zealand sources tapped. During the last European winter. Mr Robertson divided his time between conducting opera at Sadler’s Wells and at the Opera House in Brussels, where he also conducted ballet and acted as an adviser on opera.
