FALSE ALARMS NUMEROUS
More Than Third Of Fire Calls More than a third of the 1553 calls received by the Christchurch Fire Brigade in 1960-61 were false alarms, according to the annual report of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board to the Fire Service Council. The report was for the year ended March 31. The total of 1553 calls was the second highest number since records were first kept in 1909. The record number of calls wm 1694 in 1956-57 This was caused mainly by a large number at trass and hedge fires. A summary of the calls received in 1960-61 showed 560 false alarms, 151 chimney fires, 255 grass, hedge and rubbish fires, 560 property fires and 28 special service calls. The daily summary of calls showed Saturday as the day with the greatest incidence of calls. There were 247 calls on Saturdays but only 191 on Sundays, which was the lowest of the seven days. December was the month with the highest number of calls but there was no relation between the incidence of calls in summer and winter months. Whereas December had 161 calls, January and February each had only 103 calls.
