Trade In Changing World

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Nov. 30. New Zealand’s trade relations with the United Kingdom had undergone a great change and it was likely to continue changing, said Sir John Allum at the annual meeting of the Auckland division of the Institute of Management today. ••New Zealand has ceased to be a huge farm and is fast becoming also an Industrial country which will want to export some of it* .manufactured goods,” he said. He said it would be necessary for both the Government and present export agencies to consider new policies. Sir John Allum listed four '‘musts” in export trade. The first was “stocks on the

spot,” which could well involve considerable expenditure on warehouses and refrigerated stores. Next was "regular supplies,” which would involve subsidised shipping. The third was “assurance of payment” by insurance methods, which, he said, were quite common in other exporting countries, and the last was “goodwill,” which was created by honest and fair trading. “The Government should enter into a partnership with private enterprise, not to conduct export business but to get it established,” be said. The Government should be expected to de no more than insure the exporter against loss “Markets at the world, including New Zealand, are no longer free,” he said.

- “and national interference is - so great that traders now - need some encouragement s and assistance in their en--1 deavours to get established i in foreign markets where s there are possibilities of r trade.” l. Over the year* there bad 1 been a steady trend away 1. from free trade. Effective ■ protection was gained by imt port control but it created ill-will. 1 “In Western Europe the 1 Six and the Seven are each > reducing their customs duties t and the move is for a s common market,” he said. , 2 1 ““"Sf “d politic* l grounds t ‘We must be prepared to spend money and effort in - entering new markets and t above all to adopt new , methods and idea*.**
