BEEF FOR HAWAII
Import Quotas Sought (N.Z. Press Asm— Copyright) HONOLULU. November 29. The Hawaii Cattlemen's .Association was not trying to abolish all imports of New Zealand and Australian beef but was seeking a quota system few the imports, said the association’s president, Mr R. Peniiallow, yesterday. Meat imports from Australia and New Zealand had increased 800 per cent, since 1951. be said. Hawaiian cattlemen were “concerned with Hawaii's economy, rather than the abolition of the imports,” United Press International reported. So far, the beef imports had displaced only Californian products on the local market, said Mr Penhallow. “But if they are allowed to increase uncontrolled, the result will be bad for Hawaii,” he said. The Cattlemen’s Association has passed a resolution which asks Hawaii's legislators in Washington to work toward mutually-agreed quotas for each foreign country involved. This would limit the importation of all classes of beef to Hawaii at current levels.
