AROUND THE GREENS
Fixtures arranged for this week are: November 30, all-day tournament at Shirley (pairs); electric light tournament at Beckenham; December 2, Town v. Country, on town greens, Christchurch centre v. South Canterbury, for Steans Cup, at the Mona Vale club’s green, Christchurch centre v. Dunedin for Redpath Shield, at Dunedin; December 3, Sunday tournaments at Amberley, Allenton, Kaiapoi, Kirwee, R.S.A. and Woolston W.M.C.; December 4. allday tournaments at Cashmere (sanatorium day), electric light tournaments at Beckenham and Sydenham; December 5, midweek inter-club fours; December 6, all-day tournaments at Halswell and Rangiora, electric light tournaments at Kaiapoi W.M.C. and South Brighton. A decided asset to the St. Martins club is D. Sugrue, a former member of the Edgeware club. In club competitions he has not lost a game. Prominent skips should not be misled at the start of the season by a low-ranked rink on heavy green conditions. By taking a rink too cheaply with their narrow-running heavy bowls, this could spell disaster for the skip with recognised reputation. For the most part surprises in the St. Albans club’s ties are confined to the championship pairs. Son-in-law and father combination of B. Cunningham and W. Harvey secured a very good win over J. Schultz and C. Whitford, gaining the verdict by a narrow margin. Immaculate leading by the club president, H. Hartmont, greatly helped him and A. Gray to account for L. Gain and R. Vintel in a game which see-sawed throughout with only one point separating the teams at the finish. The St. Martins club’s Robinson Shield team of S. Reddell >ts), L. Patterson, A.
Buress, and D. Dixon (lead), is unbeaten this season. The end of the month mixed tournament at the Kirwee club resulted in a tie between Cockroft’s Woolston rink (four wins) and Young’s Shirley rink (four wins). The play-off provided a close finish, with Young’s rink holding a magnificent shot almost on the ’’jack.” After his second successive win in the Auckland centre's singles title, R. McDonald appears to be pre-championship favourite for the Dominion tournament in January. After losing a life in the third round he carried his lone remaining life through 10 more rounds to beat W. R. Fleming in the final, 16-11. In the Sumner club’s champion pairs competition last week, E. Stoneman and R. S. Rudd were level, 17 each, on the twenty-first end. On the extra end the jack was trailed to the edge of the rink, with Stoneman drawing the winning shot with a perfect bowl. For the first time the St. Martins club have entered a team in the three fours competition and have put up a creditable showing against some strong clubs, having scored 2214 points out of a possible 30. A fine game of bowls was played in the Sumner club’s rink on Saturday between R. Powell and C. B. Idle. Powell got away to a good start and was leading 17-10 on the fifteenth, but Idle closed the gap to 18-15 on the twentieth Idle’s team were three up when the skips changed over and in a stirring finish Idle drew the winning shot with his last bowl. “A good shot, sir,” or “well played” only cost a parting of the lips and •re sweet music to the listener.
