CUSTOMS STAFF INCREASED
Service Improved At Airport Customs control at Christchurch airport and Lyttelton has been increased by the apnomtment of more staff. Increased traffic at the airport caused by the arrival of aircraft from overseas each afternoon and movements of United States aircraft had strained staff resources, the Collector of Customs (Mr W. G. Lowrie) said yesterday. A uniformed boarding inspector had been appointed at the airport and the staff at Lyttelton was being increased, said Mr Lowrie. The service would be improved by the additional appointments, he said. The district manager in Christchurch for Tasman Empire Airways, Ltd. (Mr F. G. Hill), said the service would be further improved at the airport when the amount of traffic warranted the employment of permanent uniformed searchers. Under the existing system of drawing men from the staff of the Customs office these persons were unable to gain the experience of men who were regularly in this type of work, though they did their job well, he said.
