BUS ROUTE CHANGES
Wainoni And North Beach The Christchurch Transport Board decided yesterday to extend the Wainoni bus route from its present terminal at the corner erf Bower avenue and New Brighton road to the corner of Palmers and New Brighton roads, provided the City Council will agree to metal a small portion for the turn-round. A report by the works and traffic committee said that the extension would put residents at the southern ends of Palmers road and Baker street in the ** catchment area” of the Wainoni route Residents at the northern ends of Palmers road and Baker street are served by the North Beach service. The southern ends of Keyes road and Rawson and Pratt streets would be in the catohment area of the New Brighton service, and generally the area would be well served, the report said. Mr G. D. Hattaway: Will the extension of the Wainoni route to Palmers road mean an increase in fares? The extension is no more than a quarter at a mile, at a guess The general manager <Mr J. F- Fardell): It is normal to make an increase in fares It is beyond a section; a penny increase would be mode. , The board decided to introduce a Saturday service to North Beach via Beach road and Marine parade on a tifree-month trial during this summer and, if it is successful to continue ft during the months of October to April each year. Hie works and traffic committee reported that a threemonthe trial of the deviation and extension of the North Beach service via Bower avenue. Beach road and Marine parade showed that little use was being made of what had been termed an internal service. It concluded that there was insufficient patronage to warrant trips on Sundays via Bowhill road. Beach road and Marine parade. Answering Mr Hattaway. the chairman (Mr E. J. Bradshaw) said that no action was being taken to discontinue the deviation and extension on the North Beach route.
