TITLE RACE PROTEST

Three Skippers Disqualified

Three senior skippers who took part in the Canterbury R class championships for the Cyrus Williams trophy at Lyttelton on Sunday afternoon have been disqualified. They are C. Papps, skipper of Freeway (Canterbury’ Yacht and Motor-Boat Club), B. E. Treleaven (Fresco. Christchurch Yacht Club); and G. Wilson (Tempest. Waimakariri Sailing Club). The disqualifications were announced yesterday by the chairman of the race sailing committee (Mr J. U. Cropp). They followed a protest made after the race by a participating skipper, B. J. C. wall, who alleged barging on the part of Tempest at the beginning of the race. Fresco was placed as runnerup in the championship. Tempest finished fourth; Freeway was unplaced. Mr Cropp said that the sailing committee had heard evidence from the disqualified skippers. and another skipper, G. S. Mander, who won the championship. The protest arose from incidents among the 18 participants in the race, when they were crowded on the line waiting for the starting gun. Fresco and Tempest were both disqualified for barging. Freeway was disqualified for crossing the line before the gun and not recrossing it to start in accordance with the rules. The disqualification of Freeway was made by the sailing committee after hearing evidence of barging. The amended result of the championship is now:— Frenzy (G. S. Mander and A. M. Holland. Canterbury), 3:58.17, 1; Beta (K. Tourell and I. Scott, Waimakariri), 4:0.50,2; Impetuous (B. J. C. Wall and R Taylor, Canterbury). 4:2.24,

3; Fantastic (G. and C. Cooke, Waimakariri), 4:2.26, 4; Retort (D. Harrison and J. B. Watson, Waimakariri). 4:2.51. 5: Sari (J. Morrison and D. Taylor, Canterbury), 4:3.5, 6.
