Friendship, Goodwill Theme Of Party
With Uta Christmas message ef peace and goodwill to all men a* its theme, the Pan Pacific and South s* t Asia Women s Association called its 1961 Christmas party a “festival of friendship." Among nearly 300 guests at the party, which was held on Saturday evening at the Canterbury Museum Hall, about one-third were Colombo Plan students and other visitor* from Asian, countries. Such a party showed bow a variety of people from different lands could enjoy themselves together and develop a spirit of friendship and goodwill, said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning). He was introduced by the president of the Christchurch area group of the association (Miss Mary McLean), who welcomed guests. The programme was also international in character. It began with carols by candlelight. sung by Mr M. Smith's choir and included a Maori carol A Maori party presented
hakas, an action song and poi dance. Next came a bracket of English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh songs, for which the artists wore national dress. Indonesian students arranged a programme which included Indonesian songs, a candle dance and a group dance. Other items were Italian songs, an Indian dance and Negro spiritual songs performed also in national or character dress. Guests of honour included Mr and Mrs Manning; Mr and Mrs W. S. Mac Gibbon; Mr and Mrs Leslie Will; Mr and Mrs G. S. Troup; Mr and Mrs H. Briggs; Mr and Mrs O Wells (Amberley); Mrs H Atmore (Nelson); and Miss M. Havelaar.
