TOULOUSE Nov. 24. Toulouse regional beat the New Zealand Rugby League team 16-14 yesterday after trailing 9-11 at half-time. Three factors contributed to the New Zealand defeat. The unexpected reverse was mainly due to lack of imagination in their play, despite the speed with which their movements were carried out. The second factor was the great game played by the Lacaze brothers. Pierre at full-back and Andre, the loose forward. The former’s kicking was responsible for 10 Toulouse points and it is possible the Kiwis will find both players in the French team in the third test at Paris on Decern, ber 3. OS Form Third, the New Zealanders were completely off form in goal kicking. They scored four tries but only once added the goal points. Hie New Zealand tries came from Butterfield (4 ■ minutes), W. R. Harrison (10 ‘ minutes), B. T. Reidy (21 I minutes) and G. R. Bailey <52 | minutes). R. S. Cooke kicked | the only goal. The Kiwis dominated the game for the first 20 minutes and Butterfield put them ahead. M. L. Cooke, who was always a force, ran down the touch line in a great effort before putting Harrison over for the second try. but again the kick failed. G. R. Bailey was the next New Zealander in evidence. In a magnificent twisting run he burst through the Toulouse defence before laying on a try for Reidy. R. S Cooke added the points to make the score 11-0. Much of the cohesion had now left the Kiwi pack and Totdouse hit back to reduce

the arrears to 9-11 at half, time. G. R. Bailey added another try for the Kiwis early in the second half but it was their last scoring effort. The winning Toulouse try came from J. Lo after 70 minutes. The other French try was scored by J. Kasmarek. Mr C. Siddle. the New Zealand tour manager, said afterwards: “It was their own fault they lost. When they led 11-0 they never looked like losing, but the forwards repeatedly got into a heap and could do nothing right later. The French had only to pick up the ball and get away. I don’t like blaming the referee but he awarded 18 penalty kicks to Toulouse and only three to us. We did not play rough nor did we make any more infringements than the locals.” Mr Siddle picked out as the best of the New Zealanders G. R. Bailev. W. R. Harrison and K. R McCracken.
