JAPANESE ARE “WHITE”
South African Decision (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) PRETORIA. Nov. 23. South African Government officials confirmed today that Japanese—but not South African-born Chinese—are to be regarded as white. They may buy houses in white areas, use all white areas, and buy unrestricted quantities of spirits, British United Press reported. This contrasts with the present position of a Chinese born in South Africa, who is regarded as a coloured (half-caste). He may only live in areas set down by the Group Areas Act The classification of Japanese as white Comes after the recent announcement that Japan is setting up an embassy in Pretoria next year and is increasing her trade with South Africa.
